Introduction to Python for Scientists and Engineers
The course works with Python 3.6, Python 2.7, 3.4 or Python 3.5. Make sure you have one of these versions installed. If in
doubt which version you should use, take 3.6. The installation instructions below will tell you how to
install Python along with the IPython Notebook.
Please install all software as a user, not as root. Use the same user account you will use for the course.

IPython Notebooks
We will use an Jupyter Notebook (formerly known as IPython Notebook) for the course because it makes a very good teaching tool. You are welcome to use the setup you prefer, i.e editor, IDE, REPL. However, I highly recommend to install Jupyter Notebook.

There are two ways to install Jupyter Notebook:
- Install Anaconda (http://continuum.io/downloads) and you are ready to go if you don't mind installing
lots of packages from the scientific field. Installation instructions below. - Use Minconda (http://conda.pydata.org/miniconda.html). This allows for comfortable installation of single packages. See below for installation instructions.
Similarly to virtualenv, conda allows creating isolated environments. It works with binary installs for all platforms. This is a small install and (after you installed it) you can use the command conda to create an environment: conda create -n python_course python=3.6 (Use
python=2.7 for a Python 2.7 environment. You may change the name python_course into something else.) Change into this environment: source activate python_course. The prompt should change to (python_course). (On Windows only: activate python_course)
